It was once again time for the monthly Coffee and Cars event here in Houston, and with the city also hosting this year’s Super Bowl, I was curious to see what it would draw in as far as out-of-town visitors and their rides. The sky looked clear with no chance of rain and it was shaping up to be a good event as long as the cold weather didn’t bother you. It doesn’t get cold that often here, but for two month’s straight the weather had dropped down to some of the coldest days in Houston for the gathering. This didn’t stop the hordes of spectators from coming out and seeing the cars, this might have been the largest turnout at the Memorial City Mall Coffee and Cars to date.
Originally I had planned to bring out my own ride, but time escaped me and I didn’t have a chance to wash it. With that, I decided to arrive a bit earlier in the wife’s car to get a jump-start on coverage. As soon as I arrived, I parked the car and grabbed my gear to start my coverage of the gathering. I didn’t park near the main show area, so I had to walk over and join the gathering of people and cars already forming… there were already a lot here with more steadily arriving throughout the duration of the show. I began my coverage at the main area of the event, which was filled mostly with exotics. After the first couple of rows of not getting many shots or waiting too long for a chance. I decided it was going to be best if I jumped around and snapped photos of whatever caught my eye, or I wasn’t going to get much done and after chatting with a few friends, I did just that.
After some time had passed, I returned to the front for the special display area to grab some photos of the Pagani Huayra, which I am not sure if it was perfect timing or just bad timing as it was moments before the arrival of the carbon fiber McLaren P1. Soon I was surrounded by a massive crowd of people trying to see both cars, so I was stuck there for a bit waiting to grab a photo of the P1. After a while I tunneled my way out of the crowd to continue my coverage.
I ventured out to the rest of the parking lot going up and down each row… there were a ton of rides out here. No matter what type of cars you like, there were a few of each style out here for everyone to enjoy. Cars had already begun making their way out of the mall’s parking, so I am sure I missed the chance to see a lot of other rides. I was starting my steps for the day early, as I continued further into the back lots. Just when I thought I was at the point of no return, I caught a red FD in the distance… guess I was going even further to snap a photo of it. During my return trip, I continued capturing more photos as cars left and some still parked. The two-hour time span for the event few by fast and there were still many cars hanging about. I headed over to a friends ride to chat a bit before calling it a day.
Coffee and Cars is hosted monthly on the first Saturday of each month currently at Memorial City Mall from 8 am till 10 am. Hoping to display your ride in the main areas will require you to get there early as many arrive way before the posted time to secure their spot. See you out there next month!
